Amel Farag
Hi, my name is Amel. I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. As far as I can remember, I’ve always liked to role-play and let my imagination expand. I imagined I was an owner of a spice shop, a policewoman in a highspeed chase, and sometimes a designer like my dad. I also loved to sing and dance.
My parents immigrated to Ontario, Canada, in the ‘90s, and it was not easy for me to “fit in.” The people, the climate, the culture, and the language were different to get accustomed to. However, I was still very young then, so the only thing that helped me cope was stories and my imagination. Through them, I learned about my surroundings, which made the transition more bearable.
I became a mother in my late thirties, which is not uncommon. I felt transformed after becoming a parent; my body, mind, and spirit changed in ways I couldn’t imagine. It surprised me how quickly my body grew in resilience after giving birth, and I was in awe of my postpartum emotions.
In some ways, I felt ungrounded as motherhood wasn’t exactly how I envisioned it to be because it challenged my perspectives on perfection—at the same, embracing those imperfections made it a fulfilling experience. Suddenly, in my new postpartum body and role as a mom, I was back to the same challenges, wondering where I fit in. Am I too old for this? Is it fair to feel like this? Will I feel accomplished in 10 years? Raising two girls couldn’t be more my forte, and despite the usual challenges of raising little ones, through witnessing their zest for life and how they see the world, I was reminded of my childhood and what the world looked like through a child’s eyes.
Watching them grow and interact with my husband, myself, and others reignited my sense of curiosity and imagination. It was like getting reacquainted with a very dear old friend. So, one day, while I was getting my eldest to bed, I was inspired to write a picture book. Her silliness and quick-witted attitude inspired my first book, Pretty Please with Cheese, and somehow, my inspiration took a life of its own.
Growing up, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, which seemed fitting for me to expand on my new career path as a self-published author. I sought an illustrator who understood my vision, worked with an editor, and found a publishing company while stealing time between mothering to vendor at markets and events. At the same time, I was training as an energy healer in Usui Reiki. I received my master-level designation through a warm-hearted teacher discipled from William Rand, the founder of the International Centre for Reiki Training, the Centre for Reiki Research, and the Reiki Membership Association. This has rekindled my intuitive gifts, and I deepened my practice in the art of Tarot card reading.
In my professional career, my path to writing and having a business that I am passionate about wasn’t always linear. I’ve worked in many industries, such as pharmaceuticals, technology, and the government. Yet, despite all that, there was always one constant element: I’ve always connected to my clients and colleagues through storytelling, helping them shift their mindset or provide some insight and clarity on their current situation to help them move forward.
The Grown-up Mom is an eclectic reflection of me and my journey throughout motherhood. I use my storytelling, energy healing, and intuitive gifts to illustrate how self-care is essential to women, especially moms. Motherhood is an exciting and unique experience that I proudly attest to. As a self-published author, I use storytelling to create relatable stories that celebrate diversity, family, and all the unique aspects of life. The stories are also meant to bring healing by reminding moms of the challenges of dealing with little ones and our happiest moments and to learn to let go and stay present.
Motherhood has led me to create and bring my passions to life. It is my hope that the stories I write can bring to life the many worlds of a child’s precious imagination. As a Certified Reiki Master, I use an ancient Japanese holistic technique focusing on the body, mind and spirit. A gentle yet powerful energy tuning to help restore balance and harmony in all aspects of life. Finally, as an Intuitive Tarot Card Reader, I tap into one’s innate wisdom and uncover insights and answers that are specific to them. My readings offer clear messages from a person’s higher self, encouraging them to learn to trust more deeply, make effective decisions easily, and achieve balance in all aspects of their life.
Being a mom isn’t easy, but it’s extraordinary, so let’s celebrate these moments together because “grown-up” moms have all the fun!
